Slow Cooked Katniss Stew My Way

I am currently on book two of the Hunger Games Series, Catching Fire.  I absolutely love the way the author uses food in her book.  You can almost taste it along with the character’s in the book.

I searched for recipes on-line and came across Fictional Food website.

I knew that the family would not want lamb, so I am adapting the recipe using beef instead.

Either way,  my recipe is exactly the way I pictured Katniss’ favorite dish from the Capitol tasting like!

The aroma permeating throughout the house is amazing.



6 PP per serving

Serves 4

  • 1 lb stew meat (such as round steak), cubed
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic , minced
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • bunch of baby carrots
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 6 prunes, cut in halves
  • 1-2 sprigs rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Heat a pan on medium high heat and add 1 teaspoon olive oil.  Season the beef with salt and pepper. Brown the beef on all sides for about bout 5 minutes.  Place the browned beef in the slow cooker.

Add the carrots, onions, and minced garlic to pot. Sprinkle the brown sugar on top.

Add 1 1/2 cups water to the pan you browned the beef in. Heat and add beef stock. Scrape browned bits left from browned beef. Turn off heat.

Add the tomato paste and stir. Pour into the slow cooker.

Cook on high for 6 hours . IMPORTANT: In the last hour of cooking, mix the flour with 1/4 cup water and stir into the pot along with the prunes and rosemary.


Add salt and pepper to taste. Replace lid and let cook of an additional hour.



For additional PP you can serve this over wild rice.
